Vadose zone influences on aquifer parameter estimates of saturated-zone hydraulic theory

چکیده

Aquifer drainage was numerically simulated by a coupled, unsaturated-saturated flow equation. The effect of the vadose zone on aquifer parameter predictions of classical hydraulic theory was investigated. Saturated-zone hydraulic theory was shown to be fairly robust in estimating the saturated hydraulic conductivity but less so in estimating drainable porosity, mainly because of the much tighter possible range for the latter. Application of the coupled flow equation may explain discrepancies between predictions of classical saturated-zone theory and observations. q 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Effect of vadose zone on the steady-state leakage rates from landfill barrier systems.

Leakage rates are evaluated for a landfill barrier system having a compacted clay liner (CCL) underlain by a vadose zone of variable thickness. A numerical unsaturated flow model SEEP/W is used to simulate the moisture flow regime and steady-state leakage rates for the cases of unsaturated zones with different soil types and thicknesses. The results of the simulations demonstrate that harmonic ...

Sensitivity analysis of aquifer parameter estimations based on the Laplace equation with linearized boundary conditions

[1] Estimates of aquifer parameters, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and drainable porosity were obtained by an analytical solution of the two-dimensional Laplace equation with linearized boundary conditions and were compared to prescribed parameters in a finite element model that simulated drainage of a coupled system of unsaturated/saturated flow. Boundary conditions prerequisite for the an...

The hydraulic conductivity structure of gravel-dominated vadose zones within alluvial floodplains

The floodplains of many gravel-bed streams have a general stratigraphy that consists of a layer of topsoil covering gravel-dominated subsoil. Previous research has demonstrated that this stratigraphy can facilitate preferential groundwater flow through focused linear features, such as paleochannels, or gravelly regions within the vadose zone. These areas within the floodplain vadose zone may pr...

Airflow induced by pumping tests in unconfined aquifer with a low-permeability cap

[1] Most analytical and numerical models developed to analyze pumping test data focus on saturated flow below the water table. Traditionally the soil above the initial water table prior to pumping has been thought to have little influence on the test results and has usually been ignored. It is hypothesized that, if the unsaturated zone is capped by low-permeability soil, airflow in the unsatura...

Transmissivity of Aquifer by Capture Zone Method: An Application in the Sete Lagoas Karst Aquifer, MG, Brazil.

Transmissivity is an important hydraulic parameter to determine the amount of water passed horizontally across a given saturated thickness of an aquifer. The techniques to quantify this parameter, such as grain size analyses or pumping tests, can have limitations of time/spatial scale, viability, or economically. One technique that can be used, but little adopted, is the capture zone analysis. ...
